Privacy policy.
Introduction
This website is owned and operated by BD Author Services, which is owned and operated by me, Bodie David Dykstra. I’m committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring your personal information is handled in a safe and responsible manner. This Privacy Policy (capitalized because legal writing is crazy) describes how I collect and use information when you visit my website. To make it a less boring read, I’ve included a handful of jokes, none of which my wife even smiled at, let alone laughed.
Your Rights
You have the right to access the personal information I have on file about you. You can also ask me to correct, update, or delete it. If you’d like to exercise this right, send me a message and I’ll be happy to help.
Google Gmail
This website has several contact forms you can use to get in touch with me. When you submit a message through one of these forms, the information you provide is sent to my Google Gmail account.
What information do the contact forms collect? When you fill out and submit a contact form, I’ll collect any or all of the following information:
- Your name
- Your email address
- Your message or inquiry
- Anything else you provide in the message
How do I use your information? I only use this information to respond to your message and provide customer service.
Sharing and storage of your information. This information you submit via a contact form is stored and processed in my Gmail account. Google handles all that in accordance with its own privacy policies. You can read more about that by clicking here.
Your consent. By using a contact form and sending me a message, you consent to the collection and use of your personal information as outlined in this section. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me. If you have reservations about using one of these contact forms, I suggest you email me directly instead. You’ll find my email address at the bottom of this Privacy Policy.
Google reCAPTCHA
This website uses Google reCAPTCHA to protect against annoying spam messages. reCAPTCHA is a handy service that tries to determine on my site is a bot and who is an actual person. This service therefore collects information about users to determine if they are in fact made of flesh and blood.
What information does reCAPTCHA collect? In short, a bunch of stuff, but none of it is personal in nature. It may include some or all of the following:
- IP address
- Browser and device information (e.g., browser type, operating system, device)
- Mouse movement and clicks
- Time spent on the website and specific pages
- Any other information Google needs to make reCATPCHA do what it’s supposed to do
How do I use this information? In short, I don’t. I don’t even have access to most of it. Google uses it to keep bots or mean people from spamming my inbox, threatening me, asking for money, and hacking my site. Funny story. My old site got hacked, and the hackers hijacked Google search results for my name. For a while, if you Googled me or my business, you’d see nothing but advertisements for sketchy erectile dysfunction pills. Thanks in part to reCATPCHA, that hasn’t happened again. Yet.
Sharing and storage of this information. I don’t have access to most of the information collected by reCAPTCHA. It’s all stored and processed by Google in accordance with its own, very robust privacy policy and terms of service. You can read more about that here and here.
Your consent. By using this website, you consent to Google reCAPTCHA collecting and using your information as outlined in this section. If you wish to opt out of data collection by reCAPTCHA, you may do so by adjusting your browser settings or by using the opt-out options provided by Google. I’m pretty sure that won’t stop reCAPTCHA from working, however. I hope not, anyway.
Microsoft Clarity
I use Microsoft Clarity to better understand users’ experiences and help improve my website’s design. Microsoft Clarity is an analytics tool that helps me see how you interact with my site. By “see,” I mean Microsoft Clarity records what users do on my site. That’s right: you’re being recorded right now!
What information does Microsoft Clarity collect? Microsoft Clarity collects information about your device and your interactions with my website. It may include some or all of the following:
- Device information (type, model, operating system, browser type)
- IP address (anonymized for privacy)
- User interactions (mouse movements, clicks, scrolling)
- Page views and navigating patterns
- Session duration and engagement metrics
How do I use this information? Basically, I’ll use recordings to see what users do on my site, what pages they visit, if they encounter any problems, etc. Based on what I see, I might make changes to improve my website and its functionality.
Sharing and storage of this information. The information collected by Microsoft Clarity is stored and processed by Microsoft in compliance with its privacy policy (which you can read by clicking here). I don’t understand what most of this information actually is, and none of it reveals who you are. I just like watching the videos sometimes. If I see a recording of you reading this Privacy Policy, I’ll make sure to save it. You might be the only person to ever visit this page.
Your consent. By using this website, you consent to the collection and use of your information as outlined in this section. If you wish to opt out of data collection by Microsoft Clarity, you may do so by adjusting your browser settings or using the opt-out options provided by Microsoft.
Changes
Sometimes I’ll update this Privacy Policy. Usually, it’s because I found a typo or mistake. Less usually, the updates will reflect changes to my practices or website.
Contact Me
For more information about my privacy practices, if you have any questions, or if you would like to make a complaint, please contact me via email:
bodie@bdauthorservices.com
Having a mailing address in a privacy policy looks pretty professional, so I’ll include one here as well. I discourage you from sending me a piece of physical mail, however, because I’ll have to drive all the way into Vancouver to get it, and I would really rather not drive into Vancouver. Did you know that by many metrics Vancouver has the worst traffic in all of North America? Worse than Los Angeles, even. So please, please don’t send me a letter.
